🎶 I wanna be where the Weeki Wachee mermaids are. 🎶
Remember in elementary school when the teacher would go around asking the class what they wanted to be when they grow up? Then one bright-eyed child would raise their hand and say, “A mermaid.” The class would erupt in laughter, as the thought of an occupation as a mythical creature was impossible. Or is it?
Weeki Wachee Springs is a Florida state park that has been dazzling visitors since 1947. (Don Knotts, Elvis Presley, and Esther Williams just to name a few.) Their headlining act features beautiful, mesmerizing mermaids swimming through cool, crystal-clear waters. At this legendary enchanted spring is your chance to become a mermaid. It’s a magical opportunity that’ll lead to listing “mermaid” in your already impressive resume, leaving you with the last laugh.
Weeki Wachee Springs is searching for their newest underwater performer. The first round of a three phase hiring process will be a water audition, scheduled for Saturday, January 13, 2018, at 10:00 AM. Aspiring Weeki Wachee mermaids/mermen are expected to showcase their water abilities through an endurance swim (300 yards-timed), plus tread water (without a tail) for ten minutes.
If the first round goes swimmingly, selected applicants will be scheduled for a sit-down interview at a later date. The final phase includes a water audition with underwater ballet moves, possibly more than two underwater moves at a time, which may prove to be challenging for those uncoordinated. So be sure to practice!
The starting salary for Weeki Wachee mermaids is $10 per hour. So no full-time perks. It doesn’t seem like a lot for mermaiding, but playing a part in something bigger than yourself is a little worthwhile.
In an effort to promote education, the Weeki Wachee mermaids host a literacy program called Tail Mail. Children are encouraged to write letters to their favorite mermaid (or prince). In turn, mermaid recipients send an autograph and social media video response. You can check out the Weeki Wachee Springs YouTube for Tail Mail, behind the scenes snapshots of mermaid life, and more at the park. 😍
Don’t let this dream float on by. You must RSVP your spot to audition by emailing email@example.com, no later than January 11, 2018.
